Morgan Stanley Beats Estimates as Equities Trading Carries the Quarter
Earnings·October 16, 2026
Morgan Stanley posted third-quarter results that topped analyst expectations on both revenue and profit, giving the bank a stronger finish to the period than Wall Street had penciled in.
The biggest contributor was equities trading. Revenue from that business came in $909 million above forecasts. Stock trading desks are among the most volatile earners on Wall Street, since their results track client activity and market swings closely. A gap that large suggests clients were trading heavily during the quarter and that the bank captured a good share of that business.
Beating on both lines matters because analyst estimates set the bar for how a bank's shares are judged in the days after a report. Clearing it on revenue and earnings together signals that the strength was not limited to a single line of business, although the trading result clearly did most of the work.
The company's broader performance, including its wealth management and investment banking units, will be clearer once the full breakdown is reviewed. Investors will also be watching whether the trading strength holds into the fourth quarter, and whether it reflects a one-time burst of market activity or steadier demand from clients.
