Intel Eyes a Fresh Altera Valuation as AMD Looms Large in FPGAs

Intel (INTC) may soon get a new read on what its Altera stake is worth, and the comparison investors reach for first is AMD (AMD).

Altera makes field-programmable gate arrays, or FPGAs, chips that customers can reconfigure after manufacturing. They are used in networking gear, industrial systems, telecom infrastructure and a growing set of AI-adjacent workloads. Intel bought the business in 2015 and then moved to spin it out. In 2025 it sold a majority stake to private equity firm Silver Lake at an $8.75 billion valuation while keeping a minority holding. That deal set the benchmark any new pricing will be judged against.

A fresh valuation matters for Intel because the retained stake sits on its books and feeds into how the market sees the company's balance sheet and its efforts to raise cash and simplify the business. If Altera is repriced higher, it supports the argument that Intel sold a good asset at a fair price and kept meaningful upside. If it comes in lower, it raises questions about how much value is left in the non-core pieces Intel has been trying to monetize.

AMD is the rival to watch because it competes directly in this niche. It acquired Xilinx, the long-time leader in FPGAs, in a deal valued at about $49 billion at announcement. That gives AMD a larger and better-established programmable-logic franchise, along with the ability to pair those chips with its CPUs, GPUs and adaptive computing products. Any investor trying to put a multiple on Altera will likely lean on how the market values AMD's embedded and adaptive segment.

For Altera, the pitch is focus. Operating as a more independent company, it can court customers who may have been wary of buying from a division of a larger chipmaker with its own priorities. The challenge is scale and momentum against a rival that already has both.

The source article did not detail the timing or mechanism of any new valuation, so it is unclear whether it would come from a funding round, a sale of shares or a public listing. Investors should watch for any formal announcement from Intel or Silver Lake, along with how AMD's adaptive and embedded results trend, since those numbers will shape the comparison.
